The Journey has Come to an End
Our beloved son, brother and best friend left us this night.
A brave journey has come to an end. A journey that lasted exactly for 25 years, 4 months and 15 days. A journey of a huge heart in a weak and small body. A journey of a brilliant mind in a far to weak shell.
As Mats shared with us all in this blog he was born with some challenges very few could imagine. He was however never bitter, angry or expressed any sort of unfairness. Quite the contrary Mats was the one filling us and his sourandings with sunshine, positive thoughts and optimism. During his more than 25 years amongst us he never had one negative or bad thing to express about another human being or living creature.
For those of us who was fortunate enough to learn to know Mats we share a commen experience - we got to spend time with a great little man. Mats enriched us in teaching us to be able to differ between the important and the not so important things in life. Mats was the true advocate of smiling to the world in order to get a smile back and Mats thought us the power of positive thinking. In Mats we experienced something as rare as a true wise man. They are few, but you recognise them when you meet them. Mats was such a person.
At 23:45 on November 18th the journey of the bravest amongst us came to an end. Now we will start walking the path of sorrow. We have experienced the feeling when parents leave us, but now we will experience something nobody should have to experience - the loss of a child and a brother. This will be a different path to follow. The only conviction we have is that Mats is the one person for whom it is worth going down this rocky path.
Today is a day for sorrow and sadness. But one day soon will also be the day to celebrate a fantastic personality, a strong will to live and a substantial and sustainable influence on his sourandings.
We have loved you so much, we will continue to love you and even if your own journey came to an end this night you will always participate in our joint journey together.
You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

I got to know Mats, or Ibelin as I knew him as through the Warcraft guild Starlight, he knew me as Nomine and for seven years we shared laughs, adventure, ups and downs.

The loss of somebody like that, a good and strong person will be keenly felt by all who knew him.

SvarSlettI too knew Mats from Starlight. Our characters went on adventures together and explored a world in which so much more was possible than real life would offer him.
SvarSlettWe bantered and bickered, laughed and shouted at each other in character while behind the scenes Mats would make sure people were in fact still feeling alright.
He talked about his illness, never in such a way that people might feel sorry for him. The eternal optimist, he grabbed all that he could from the game that we all enjoyed.
I never got to meet him.
Not for real.
And yet I find myself flabbergasted, shocked and in tears.
Yes, he made a lasting impression on me, ever the social being and enthusiastic adventurer.
I cannot even begin to imagine the gaping hole it must leave for you, his family.
You already know that he was valued and loved.
Know that in this virtual world he stood strong and made a difference to many people; that he made us laugh.
I can only hope we returned the favour.
I knew him as a Starlighter.
Now he has gone into that light.
I hope he'll shine up there.
Because to many of us, he IS a star.

I knew Ibelin, though admittedly, not well. I first got to know him during my brief time in Starlight, then, I ran into him in other games, such as Guild Wars 2. He was a good man, always friendly, with never a bad word about you or anyone else, and a great roleplayer.

I came to read Ibelins blog after I did read about him at one of facebooks ' finnish World of Warcraft" group.
SvarSlettI have no words. His blog and written story about him and his guild Starlight made me cry. I felt sametime happines and sadness.
All I can say as ex World of Warcraft player that it has helped me also go through tough times and some of my guildies became my good friends in real life too.

As a former gamer and role player I was deeply moved by Mats` story. I know the friendships that can form across borders and contries, and the world is better when you have this fellowship, someonw to hold your back. My family did not understand my gaming and was worried for me and what they concidered an unhealthy hobby. Now, years later, luckily they understand more. And as I now am a mother of a child who is mostly housebound due to illness, I support the gaming that takes place in my child`s room. Because I understand.

SvarSlettAs a disabled human I have never cried as much or harder (literal drops falling) watching the Ibelin film. Felt incredibly seen and understood. The film found a way to capture the emotions I felt along my journey from able bodied to disabled. Ibelin reminded me of a friend I met along the way who was also in a chair and also died young. She also had more of an impact than she realized. :)
SvarSlettThe silver lining of covid was that no one could see me from the waist down on zoom calls and I was less judged by my outward appearance and more by the content of my character and ideas, a pleasant change of pace. (Have reflexive sympathetic dystrophy and have to wear shorts and flip flops regardless of how formal or informal the personal or professional space is.) SlettAs somebody who had never heard of Ibelin before and recently watched the documentary about him, he was truly a great guy.
SvarSlettHe's somebody that I want to be, a person who makes a difference in other people's lives for the better. It's really sad that his opportunities slowly vanished as he got closer to the fact that he was going to die prematurely. But we all know he's in a much better place now, free from his terrible disability and illness.
Mats "Ibelin" Steen shall never be forgotten and will remain in our hearts.
I just got done watching the movie on Netflix about Ibelin aka Mats. While I didn't know him, I too play WoW, and have for about 12 years now, granted we are on different sides (FOR THE HORDE!!!), I'm glad to have heard his story. The game means alot to me, it's one way I remember a great love of mine, who was also taken too soon (R.I.P. Widowkeeper). TBA you for sharing your story Ibelin!.

Watched the documentairy today and despite they say "grown man dont cry" i certainly spilled some tears, never knew him but wished i did.

I'm 40 years old, born in 1983, I started playing MMORPG in 1996 with Ultima Online, video games have always been present in my life since 1994, I've always played RPG too, I was very touched by his story, and Matt is a person with a spirit enlightened, even though I do know him only now, one of the best people I didn't have the opportunity or pleasure of meeting, but I'm grateful for sharing his existence and story, it really touched me, I'm a senior software engineer in career transition to game development, I will never see the game developer profession in the same way again.
His story has a profound impact, there is life before knowing his story and after knowing it.

I've been in Azeroth for almost 20 years, and recently stepped away due to the paths of adult life. Mats' story moved me deeply; it's even a bit hard to express myself.
SvarSlettInspiring stories can also be devastating; Making me feel like sometimes destruction feels necessary so that we can build better things.
We all have some unfulfilled dreams, a few regrets, and some pain. The tears shed upon learning Mats' story helped me remember how much I've lived and how much I still have left to live.
As for my time in Azeroth, I wish I could tell the friends I made there that I'm sorry for the times I hurt them, that I'm proud of the good things we accomplished together, that I miss the Guild I helped found and eventually led for a few years, that I miss all the hours we spent together. And even though life has moved on, I've learned a lot from everything we experienced.
Likewise, it’s clear how much Ibelin touched people throughout his journey. He continues to touch us, in fact. Proof that a good heart is bigger than the body that carries it across the world. Bigger than the physical and digital worlds. I hope this text reaches others who want to make the world a better place and carry in their hearts the desire to make their worlds better places.
Wherever he may be, Ibelin left us a lesson that will ensure he is always remembered.

SvarSlettIt is rare to find people so empathetic, kind and authentic in real life. But it is extremely rare to find someone like this online. You must be proud of what he accomplished in such a short time, in a place that people tend to use to mask their feelings and be more mean, not kinder.
As a famous quote in Blade Runner says: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very very brightly".

SvarSlettI never knew Mats personally, but in a way I feel many of us knew our own "Mats" through many of our countless faceless friends we've met online, especially us social outcasts who grew up in 90s and early 00s to see online gaming boom the way it did. We were all Mats in a way, and I think that's why the documentary and this very blog resonates so powerfully with such a large audience of people our age.
Gaming now is less intimate. It's less social. Even WoW is guilty of this. Gaming companies focus more on retention and loot crates and increasing their bottom line, and it's very rare now to find a community of players you can build real relationships with now. This is okay for many of us who are now in our mid to late thirties, with our own families and careers not leaving any time for our online adventures, but I feel bad for the younger generation now where gaming is simply joining parties of nameless CPU-like players who kill the boss and then never see one another again. That closeness we had of knowing people in our servers as if we were living there, like Ibelin did, doens't really exist anymore. And it's a bit sad. Those many, many hours I've spent online with faceless friends who (thanks to social media) became real life friends will always be very, very precious to me.
I wanted to thank Mats for living such a beautiful life, and the makers of The Remarkable Life of Ibelin for capturing the authenticity in something that many of us shared with Mats.
See you in the next life, brother. For Azeroth.

SvarSlettWatched the documentary today. I've read Mats' story before, it was on newspapers here in Finland too. The story touched me back then, because I was a wow player myself and today the game has been a part of my life for 20 years. It's a world to escape to, even when there's nothing to escape from. The documentary touched me even more, because it told a more deep story of Mats. Thank you for sharing his story, made me cry.

I don't read it hear, but I am just as much impressed by the family and people around Mats, as you too seem to have been able to think in possibilities. He had made a good choice choosing you as parents.
What I take out of the story most is that it is never the surroundings that make or break your state of mind. I also know this because of my niece: always struggling with severe health issues, but (almost) always cheerful and possitive. Such luck that Mats was a living example of this insight. Not complaining is a choice and a strong one. The surroundings don't force you into negativity.
I am also impressed by the explanation of the gameworld. I have never understood the appeal to this escape, untill this documentary. I like the interaction between the game characters in the game world and their creators in the real world through chat, video and even meetings.
I think it was very strong of the family to understand these friendships so soon after Mats' death and it is touching that they invited these online friends at his funeral.
The thing was touched me most was the silence that Mats had kept for so many years. That part made me really sad and luckily he did open up at the end. But oh, what would it have been nice had he dared to show up at the Denmark-meeting, or meeting Kai in Oslo... I am absolutely sure that the guild would have excepted him complete with wheelchair and difficulties and all. So sorry he felt he had to keep hidden.

Меня, как и многих других, тронула невероятно грустная и невероятно красивая история о жизни Мэтса-Ибелина. Я рыдал как малое дитя сидя перед монитором. Но перед просмотром пришлось потрудиться, чтобы искуственный интеллект помог мне при просмотре видео выводя субтитры – так я не упустил почти ничего.
В голове крутятся мысли о том времени, в которое Мэтс родился. Чуть раньше и жизнь была бы другой. Чуть позже и может быть все было бы как в моей любимой книге «Играть чтобы жить», которую написал Дмитрий Рус. Не знаю переведена ли серия книг на другие языки. Эта серия книг – икона нового жанра для литературы литрпг. Книги про онлайн игры в недалеком будущем с возможностью полного погружения в игру используя капсулы полного погружения где социальная составляющая – любовь, дружба, вражда – на первом месте.
Это было около недели назад. Меня переполняют куча эмоций. Благодарность многим людям в их числе. Вера в людей тоже. Вера в людей и насколько мы разные сразу бросается в глаза даже здесь – в этом блоге. Раздражают бездушные псевдо коммерческие комментарии сомнительного содержания. И в это же самое время поражают комментарии тех кто пришел сюда выразить свои благодарность и почтение вам и Мэтсу.
Меня поразило пару моментов. Не знаю правильно ли лезть сюда со своими впечатлениями и чувствами. Но это блог Мэтса – так что поделюсь.
Я очень давно играю в WOW. Иногда забрасываю, но всегда возвращаюсь. Я из России и силу политической ситуации Близзард закрыла возможность легально играть в нашей стране. С выходом нового дополнения игры я из-за невозможности играть опять ненадолго забросил игру. Но неделю назад, после просмотра фильма возникло просто непреодолимое желание-порыв добраться до небольшого островка в Элвиннском лесу хотя бы на пару минут – просто постоять там или посидеть. Решение принято, выход найден. Я в игре. Создаю любимый класс персонажа – охотник. И называю его Iiom - Ibelin in our memories. Вход в игру, но я появляюсь далеко от Штормграда, что рядом с Элвиннским лесом куда я рвусь. Приходится проделать стартовую цепочку квестов. Минут 30-40 и вот я В Штормграде. В кармане 7 с небольшим золотых. Трачу еще минуты 3 на важное дело. Пишу случайному игроку высокого уровня с просьбой может ли он подарить мне одну или две большие сумки (каждая стоит около 90 золотых). Купить сам в ближайшее время не в состоянии. Но игрок говорит «Ты где? Подожди минуту.» Потом подходит ко мне и дарит 3 большие сумки и 500 золотых. Благодарю его от всего сердца. Это небольшое отступление про веру в людей)) Дальше путь лежит в Элвиннский лес. Я 10 уровня, нет никакого транспорта – так что бегу на своих двоих как делал Ибелин. 3 минуты и я на месте. И то что я вижу еще больше укрепляет веру в людей, и в WOW коммьюнити в частности. У могилки Ибелина находятся около 6-8 игроков. Это было на сервере Silvermoon. В случайное время на одном из многих серверов WOW нас было около 7 человек кто пришел не сговариваясь отдать дань Ибелину. Через 10 минут Близзард забанили мой новый аккаунт))
SvarSlettНо играть в WOW все еще хочется. Возвращаюсь на один из старых аккаунтов с так называемым пиратским сервером. Там много испаноговорящих игроков из разных стран: Мексика, Аргентина, Португалия, Парагвай, Испания. Есть игроки англоговорящие и русскоговорящие. Всю неделю по вечерам после работы бегая с разными ребятами по подземельям, для которых нужны 5 человек собранных вместе я спрашивал в каждой новой группе смотрели ли они фильм об Ибелине. И ответы были разными. Около половины говорили, что конечно смотрели. Один парень из Аргентины когда я его спросил об этом молчал около минуты - видимо гуглил) потом написал "Воу, спасибо, я обязательно посмотрю". Как-то стоя в Вальдракене у аукциона увидел аватар с ником с из букв латинского алфавита охотника (тот же класс что и у меня) экипированный лучше меня. Я спросил человека на английском может он мне показать где я могу улучшить экипировку. В ответ получил фразу на английском «I don’t speak English». Я залез в гугл и перевел вопрос на испанский. Человек написал «nope» в ответ. Увидев что в вопросе была ошибка я хотел написать lol но была русская раскладка клавиатуры включена и получилось «дщд». В ответ получил «ДЩД ДЩД))))» и понял, что человек говорит по-русски. Она показала где я могу улучшить мою экипировку и я по обыкновению спросил смотрела ли она фильм об Ибелине. Она сказала, что что-то такое слышала. Я написал, что у этого человека есть могилка в WOW. В ответ получил незамедлительное «Знаешь координаты?». Я написал следовать за мной. Мы оседлали наших драконов и полетели к телепорту в Штормград. В Штормграде выйдя из башни магов опять прыгнули на драконов и спустя несколько секунд мы были на месте. Она простояла молча около минуты и потом написала «Моё уважение». Я ответил, что да Близзарды большие молодцы. Отношение WOW комьюнити к истории Ибелина – это что-то невероятное.
SvarSlettЕще что меня поразило после просмотра фильма – это Мэтс на семейной видеохронике. В его положении сохранять такой настрой – дорогого стоит. Не знаю выбирал ли Бенджамин Ри такие кадры. Но почти везде Мэтс улыбается. Это потрясает. Даже на последних видео он с улыбкой на лице. Невероятное самообладание и любовь к своей семье. Но в этом не только он, но и Вы, все кто его окружал. Без Вашей поддержки и любви такого эффекта бы не было.Спасибо Вам, семье Мэтса. Не представляю как вам всем было тяжело решиться на все это, но огромное спасибо вам что сделали это. Иногда в голове крутятся разные мысли. Что ели бы вы от переизбытка любви к сыну в попытке продлить его жизнь – запрещали бы играть допоздна, заставляя соблюдать постельный режим как настаивали врачи? Но Вы на каком-то интуитивном уровне так не делали. Спасибо. Ведь «сидение за компьютером по 6-10 часов в день» это бессмысленная трата времени как принято считать… Я знаю людей кто создал семьи, начав общаться в WOW. Социальная составляющая WOW – это значительная часть игры. Спасибо, что именно вы были частью его жизни – его поддержкой.

The Netflix movie brought me here, 10 years later, without having any idea of the story if Mats. If a 55 years old can still learn some life lessons and be brought to tears, Mats first and his family after have done something incredible.
